How My Dyslexia Journey Began
My name is Carolyn Schultz, and I live in Hayden, Idaho. I am a certified tutor in the Barton Reading & Spelling System, and I am excited to share the HOPE that this program brings to students of all ages!
I didn't plan to become a dyslexia specialist. I went to college, got a degree in journalism, and started my career in writing. Then I had kids, and that's when things got challenging.
My first son, though incredibly bright, could not sound out simple words in first grade. His teachers reassured me that all was well, but I knew better. After lots of research, tears, and evaluations, my son was diagnosed with severe dyslexia.
I ended up home schooling him for three years. During that time, I used the Barton Reading & Spelling System to teach him reading, spelling, and grammar. Then we moved to Idaho, and he began attending an academically challenging private school. He graduated in the top 10 percent of his high school and is now a junior at a college with an acceptance rate of less than 20 percent. His high school counselor said his college application essay was one of the best she had read in 20 years.
I share this story because I want you to see that there truly is HOPE for people with dyslexia. They just need to be taught to read and spell using special multi-sensory and systematic methods.
After my son's successful experience with the Barton System, I realized I wanted to help other students achieve their highest potential. I have been tutoring since 2008 and am now certified at the Advanced Level in the Barton Reading & Spelling System.
